My Kanto Re-creation Project (Made in RPG Maker XP - Essentials)

Been working on this for a few years now as a level design project. This is a re-imagining of the Kanto Region in the Gen 3 art style made entirely in RPG Maker XP using Pokémon Essentials. Though I stick to Gen 3's art style, my map layouts and reimagined town and road designs take inspiration from Heart Gold and Soul Silver as well as the Let's Go games, the anime, the manga, and I threw some original ideas in there.

Graphics wise, I only modified some things through Photoshop, but most of the art seen here was either ripped from the original Fire Red and Leaf Green games, or from Pokémon Emerald.

I made Pallet Town look more like an open country town, as Let's Go describes it. I also gave Oak a backyard like he has in the anime.

I like how Route 1 was more layered, like in HGSS instead of just a flat road.

I added a canal through Viridian City and also gave the small school there a whole campus. The house north of the Pokémon Center is a place I would imagine to be a TR shop that you'd exchange Shards for.

Route 22 now has a Courtyard just outside of the Badge Check Gate. I'd imagine this is where you could find greenhorn trainers not sure how to start collecting badges.

Route 2 I made a little compact compared to the original, but I added more things to the negative space to make the compact feel prettier.

Viridian Forest's design is directly based of HGSS's. I always loved the lush feel to it. Also that open spot in the center is where I'd imagine the Mossy Rock to be.

For Pewter City I went with a rocky rubble theme for its design. It's surrounded by mountainous areas and is the first major area with significantly less field.

My goal for Route 3 was to make it feel like you were gradually climbing a mountain, so it gradually gets more mountainous as you travel.

Route 4 has a Fishing Spot! Imagined after the Magikarp Salesman who's here, instead he would give sell you a Fishing Rod, which you could then immediately test out and catch your own Magikarp, or something else in there...

The idea for the waterfall and the inclines here on Mt. Moon was to symbolize how giant this cave is.

This is the lowest floor. I didn't upload a middle floor because those are just the same as the original - small straight shot halls for transition purposes.

Cerulean City I'm particularly fond of. Misty's Gym now has a moat. I have a Berry Shop. Another TR exchange place, and some ways I imagined leaving town.

It always bothered me how Route 24's Nugget Bridge was on top of a grassland, so I fixed that. Also the path back with the puddles is inspired off of HGSS. Obviously.

I replaced the bushes on this route with actual trees. It felt more wood-sy to me. Also I put Bill's Lighthouse from the anime here. I'd imagine the player having to climb the lighthouse to find Bill at the top, similar to Olivine's Lighthouse.

Route 5 I revolved around having an actual Day Care or Nursery here instead of a half-baked one, with a little yard and everything.

Not a whole lot I did to Route 6, but I wanted to show it off anyway. But what's to the left over there?

Pokémon Tech from the anime is now to the left of Route 6. Basing its location over where Ash is on his journey when he visits there. Trainers fought here would be drastically over-leveled and use more competitive sets when you battle them.

Quite possibly one of my favorite towns to design, Vermilion City I made with more of a port/harbor theme in mind. The construction project to the east is finally finished! I imagined it would be a hotel for tourists visiting from the S.S. Anne.

I added a small beach area to Route 11, as well as some taller grass. Wild double battles could happen here, as well as trainers hiding in the grass, waiting to pounce!

In between Routes 11 and 12 I have my own National Park, taking inspiration from Johto's. There's a pavilion to the north where Bug Catching contests are held.

I made Diglett's Cave shorter. Like a lot shorter. But there's an optional path or two you can take to go exploring for Shards.

I redesigned Route 9 completely. I never liked how bland the original looked, so I wanted to make it more windy and mountainous.

More of the same here for Rock Tunnel. I'd imagine more monster-ish Pokémon those Maniacs like to use would be found here, like Kangaskhan, Slowpoke, Rhyhorn, hence why people say Maniacs like to gather here.

This is the other side of Route 10, where the end of Rock Tunnel is. It was too big to combine all of Route 10, so I have the two halves uploaded separately.

I made a purple ground in Photoshop to use for Lavender Town, inspired greatly by Let's Go. I used HGSS's layout, but no Radio Tower. The traditional tower of souls remains, and its moved spot in HGSS, a Memorial Shrine instead.

For Route 8, I added an extra windy path to explore, as well as a possible secret tunnel. Maybe to find a rare Pokémon?

Celadon City is my favorite city in Kanto! And it was just as fun to put together. I wanted to imagine all the smaller areas, like the Hotel and Restaurant, and made them unique buildings. As well as a small park. Loved designing this place!

For my reimagining, this is Route 17, not 16. (16 is moved elsewhere) and the original 17 is now a drawbridge that replaces the whole Cycling Road, mainly so ships can get through to go to Vermilion. North is also a gateway to a Mt. Silver-like area.

This is my redesigned Fuchsia City. Most buildings here were from a tile set I found that ripped buildings from Emerald. I wanted to make Fuchsia stand out compared to the other cities, and it seemed fitting to make it more cultural.

Just east of Fuchsia is where I now have Route 16. I needed four routes for my little road here from Fuchsia to Lavender. And all these roads up ahead were completely redesigned, new theme and everything.

Route 15 is now a straight shot between 14 and the new 16. Redesigned the original area completely. The reason why I changed these southeastern routes here is because I wanted a more adventure-themed setting in Kanto somewhere, one like Hoenn's Route 119.

The newly designed Route 14. This route I imagine to be raining here constantly, so it's very marshland-like. I never liked the original area, with all those fences.

The new Route 13. In the original, this road was a horizontal path of fences. But I made that spot Route 14 (and changed it) and this area is now the second half of 12 as its own route. Also new - Also rainy - And took a little inspiration from Hoenn.

This is a new village I made to be a secret area you'd access on my Route 13. These shops would have special Move Tutors and Evolution Stones. Think of it as a reward for getting through Routes 16 to 13.

For Route 12, I removed that silly gate in the middle of the sea and made it just a straight-shot bridge route. The original second half of this is now its own Route, which is the new 13.

Saffron City I made a little more compact and the Silph building shorter. 11 floors is too tall. I'd like to redesign it to have a good eight floors instead.

Route 19 has a little beach area based off of Porta Vista from that one banned episode (no swimsuit contest here though. Sorry) I also added the house that you'd play that Pikachu surfing game on. Instead that's where a Pikachu could learn Volt Tackle.

For the Seafoam Islands, I thought it would be more interesting to just make one giant snow-themed island, and have players explore it for the entirety of Route 20 instead of just another sea route. This is also a potential location for an Icy Rock.

The caves of the Seafoam Islands are now all underneath the snowy exterior, to which the player could either explore these, or the snowy exterior up top to pass through. Exploring these caves would no longer be required.

Some slight layout changes for this bottom floor. Mainly to the north eastern area. That spot is where I'd imagine the TM for Ice Beam would be found.

I loved how Cinnabar Island turned out! I wanted to make this area have a lively town feel and give the island its own harbor for the possibility of going to the Sevii Islands. Also I added the famous Volcano that will eventually destroy this place.

An interior idea I have for Cinnabar's Volcano. I'm thinking this could be an optional dungeon of sorts. Instead of wild Pokémon spawning in the Mansion, they would live here instead.

Sea routes can be hit or miss for me. I usually prefer small breaks in between all that Tentacool death trap you call "water." So a few small islands to pit stop at is just what I'd like!
